The base lithograph is titled ”Surrealist Crutches” and is a photolith (Jobin) of an original etching (Rigal) from the 1971 suite ”Memories of Surrealism” by Salvador Dali, published in France by Transworld Art/ A&E Rich.
Salvador Dali has painted over this exemplar of his lithograph in yellow, blue and red gouache & white crayon, including a large iconic Dali ”Space Elephant” in red gouache, the four long mosquito legs and trunk of which are most distinct. The piece is signed by Dali in three places: in red gouache and again in white crayon, lower right; and in red gouache, lower left, over the tip of the Space Elephant’s dandling trunk. The lithograph has been trimmed down from its original dimensions to its current size: 51.5 cm x 41.3 cm. The base lithograph is in generally fair condition with some color fading and foxing of the Arches art paper stock.
