Niki de Saint Phalle

Dove, Painted Polyester. Height: 18 cm. Signed. Provenance: Jerusalem Foundation. In 1971, the international artist Niki de Saint Phalle, received an invitation from the Jerusalem Foundation to head an architectural sculpture project for the children of the Kiriyat Yovel neighbourhood in Jerusalem. The artist was assisted by Jean Tinguely who served as her advisor and over the course of 1972 the sculpture was built. Much beloved, it earned the name ’the Golem’. In light of the success of this communal sculpture, the Foundation looked for another opportunity for joint collaboration which it found in the Noah’s Ark built at the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem. Ms. Saint Phalle created the animals for the Ark in collaboration with the well known international architect Mario Bota. Saint Phalle created a few maquettes for the animals of the ark and this is one of them.
