b. 1945
Yair Garbuz is a modern Israeli writer and artist, he was born in Givataim in 1945. During the 1960s he studied painting at the "Avni Institute of Art and Design" in Tel Aviv, with artists Raffi Lavie, Moshe Propes and Yehiel Krize. Since 1973, Garbuz teaches in the art department at "Hamidrasha" school of art in Beit Berl. Between 2011 and 1997 he was head of "Hamidrasha" school of art in Beit Berl. Inspiration for his artwork is American Pop Paintings. This can be seen by the technique involved in his work, the use of collage, photography, mixed media and connection to texts. In addition, in his paintings an influence can be found by the works of the artists Raffi Lavie, Yehezkel Streichman, Avigdor Stematsky and Lea Nikel with the hovering and prominent color stains. Many of his works from the 60's and 70's are characterized by collage. Garbuz tended to take photographs and newspaper clippings and paste them on plywood that served as the work surface. Through the use of newspapers in his art, Garbuz addresses to subjects such as history, with humoristic and critical statements. His wife is his usual model in his art and stars in different places and positions. The art Garbuz makes has many details and different images. His painting technique involves layers of sketching, colors and paste. Yair Garbuz has participated in many solo exhibitions at important art institutions in Israel and around the world. Garbuz won many grants and awards during his lifetime for his work, including The Emet Prize for Art, Science and Culture award by the A.M.N. Foundation for Advancement of Science (2004), in addition he also received the Rappaport Prize for an Established Israeli Painter by the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2015). In 2017, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art presented his solo exhibition titled "Ingathering". Garbuz is also known as a publicist and a political activist, during the 2015 elections for the Israel Knesseth he gave a controversial statement that caused a commotion. In 2010, Garbuz's painting was sold at Tiroche Auction House for $20,700, a record price for the artist.
