A GILT BRONZE SCULPTURE IN THE FORM...

Likely France, c. 1900 Marked ‘Susse Fres’ 12.5 cm high *The Susse Freres Bronze foundry is the sole survivor of the great French foundry traditions from the first half of the nineteenth century. In 1758, Jean Susse moved to Paris to practice several different professions with his sons, Nicolas and Michel Victor. Initially Susse Freres was a stationery store that also sold some plaster and bronze figu-rines. In 1830s they began producing bronze castings and opened another store to display their artistic sculpture. Succeeding family members continued the work and to this day the foundry has preserved a reputation for high quality workmanship producing works by and for major French sculptors.
